Epocrates enters the EHR market

One in three U.S. physicians uses Epocrates medical reference tools on a mobile device to help them make decisions at the point of care. Epocrates announced yesterday that it is developing an electronic health record (EHR) system that “meets the unique needs of solo and small group physician practices,” promising a web-hosted system that is easy to use, affordable and that satisfies the “meaningful use” requirements of the federal government’s EHR incentive program.

The EHR will be released in the fourth quarter of this year. No word on which of the many solo and small practice needs it will meet. Is it too much to hope for a system that would extract fair payment from health plans, cut through Medicare red tape, arrange for call coverage and get you home in time for dinner?
